What FIRST Is

FIRST stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" and was founded in 1992 by inventor Dean Kamen. There are three major branches of FIRST: the FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST LEGO League, FIRST Vex Challenge. Our team participates in the FIRST Robotics Competition, a program with teams from all over the world building robots to compete in a challenging game. The teams have six weeks to build and program the entire robot, making it challenging and exciting.

The Game

This year's game is called "Rack 'n' Roll". Two alliances (red and blue), consisting of three robots each, collect inflated tubes ("ringers") to score points by hanging them in rows on the huge circular rack in the middle of the field. Bonus points are awarded for any robots that are more than twelve inches off the ground when the end buzzer sounds.

FIRST's Mission

"To create a world where science and technology are celebrated... where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes" - Dean Kamen

FIRST aims to create more interest in science and technology among young people. With the inspiration of FIRST, students can take part in dveloping a world where innovation is part of recreation. The achievements of a scientist can be as interesting as the achievements of a popular sports or music star. Students participating in FIRST programs learn about science, mathematics, and technology while having a good time and building team relationships.
